A fridge that hums but doesn't cool is usually one of four faults. Dirty coils, a bad door seal, a dead evaporator fan or a defrost problem. Compressor failure is the one nobody wants, but it is the rarest of the list. Start with the cheap checks and you may fix it yourself.
Warm food is also a safety matter, so don't leave it for weeks. If the fridge has been warm for hours, move the milk, meat and fish to a cooler box first.
Dust on the condenser coils
The coils sit at the back or under the fridge. They push out the heat the fridge pulled from inside. When they are coated in dust, the heat has nowhere to go, so the fridge runs longer and cools less.
You will notice the fridge running almost all the time, and the back panel feeling warm. It is cooling a little, just not enough.
Unplug it, then vacuum and wipe the coils. That is a fair job for a homeowner if you can reach the back. If the fridge is built into a cabinet, or you don't want to pull it out, a technician can do it during a visit.
A door seal that doesn't grip
The rubber strip around the door keeps cold air in and humid Malaysian air out. When it cracks or goes loose, warm air leaks in all day and frost builds up near the door.
Here is a quick test. Close the door on a strip of paper. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal isn't holding. Try it at the top, the bottom and both sides, because seals often fail in one corner only.
A new seal is usually a small job compared with the other faults here. It is worth doing on a fridge that is otherwise healthy.
The evaporator fan stops
Most modern fridges are frost-free. A small fan inside pushes cold air from the freezer into the fridge section. When that fan fails, the freezer stays cold and the fridge slowly warms up.
That pattern is the clue. Freezer fine, fridge warm. Open the door and press the door switch with your finger. You should hear the fan. No sound at all is a sign the motor has died, or ice has jammed the blades.
So if you hear a scraping noise instead, ice is likely touching the fan. That points to the defrost system, which is next.
Defrost system failure
Frost-free fridges melt the frost off the cooling coil from time to time, using a heater, a thermostat and a timer. If one of those parts fails, the frost keeps building until it blocks the airflow. The fridge gets a little warmer each day until it barely cools at all.
There is a simple test. Unplug the fridge, leave the doors open until all the ice has melted, then switch it on again. If it cools properly again for a while and then slowly gets warm, the defrost system is almost certainly the cause. Defrosting only clears the symptom, so the fault will come back until the failed part is replaced.
Compressor or gas trouble
If the fridge is warm in both sections, and the back is very hot or the motor clicks on and off, the compressor or the sealed system may be failing. This is the expensive one.
We won't guess here. We check the unit first, then tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it. Topping up gas without finding the leak is only a short-term fix, and we'd say so before you pay for it.
Repair or replace
Age and number of faults decide it. A younger fridge with a seal, fan or defrost fault is almost always worth repairing. An old fridge with a failed compressor, or one with several faults at the same time, is often better replaced.

A seal and a compressor are very different jobs, and a number on a web page would be wrong for one of them.
