Fridge Not Cooling? 5 Causes and Whether You Need a Repair or Replacement

Your refrigerator is running but not cold enough — or not cold at all. Here are the likely causes, what a repair costs in KL, and when it makes sense to replace instead.

A warm fridge is not just inconvenient — it's a food safety issue. If your refrigerator is running (you can hear the compressor) but the temperature inside isn't cold enough, here are the most likely causes and what to do.

1. Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are at the back or underside of the fridge. They release the heat the refrigerant has absorbed from inside. When coils are coated in dust (which happens within 1–2 years in a typical Malaysian home), heat release is impaired — the fridge has to work harder and cooling efficiency drops.

Signs: Fridge feels warm on the outside at the back. Running constantly. Slightly warm inside but not completely warm.

Fix: Vacuum and wipe the condenser coils. This is a DIY-accessible fix if you can access the back of the fridge. If you're not comfortable, a technician handles it as part of a service visit.

2. Faulty Door Seal (Gasket)

The rubber seal around the fridge door keeps cold air in and warm, humid Malaysian air out. When the seal cracks, tears, or deforms, cold air escapes continuously and the compressor has to run constantly to compensate.

Quick test: Close the fridge door on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out easily, the seal isn't gripping — it needs replacing.

Signs: Frost building up more than usual. Fridge running all the time. Interior warm even though compressor is clearly on.

Repair cost: Door gasket replacement typically RM100–200 depending on the fridge model and size. Well worth doing for a fridge less than 7–8 years old.

3. Evaporator Fan Not Working

In frost-free fridges (which is most modern fridges), a small fan circulates cold air from the freezer section to the fridge section. If this fan motor fails, the freezer stays cold but the fridge compartment warms up.

Signs: Freezer is still making ice correctly but the fridge section above is warm. You can't hear the fan running when you open the fridge and hold the door switch.

Fix: Evaporator fan motor replacement — typically RM150–300 depending on model.

4. Defrost System Failure

Frost-free fridges run a defrost cycle several times a day using a heating element to melt frost off the evaporator coil. If the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer fails, frost accumulates on the evaporator coil until airflow is completely blocked.

Signs: This happens gradually over 2–4 weeks. The fridge gets progressively less cold. Eventually it stops cooling almost entirely even though the compressor is running.

Quick check: If you defrost the fridge completely (unplug it for 24 hours with the doors open) and cooling returns for a few weeks before the problem comes back, the defrost system is almost certainly the cause.

Repair cost: RM150–350 depending on which component has failed (heater, timer, or thermostat).

5. Compressor or Refrigerant Issue

If the compressor is failing or refrigerant has leaked out, the fridge will barely cool at all. The compressor may be running (you can hear it humming) but not pumping refrigerant properly.

Signs:

  • Fridge completely warm even after running for hours
  • Compressor runs hot (very warm to touch on back of fridge)
  • No cooling at all in either fridge or freezer

This is the most serious and expensive fault. Compressor replacement on a standard household fridge costs RM400–700+ including parts and labour. Refrigerant recharge without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary solution.

Our recommendation: Get a diagnosis first (we charge for the callout). If the compressor is the issue on a fridge more than 8–10 years old, we'll give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement makes more financial sense.

When to Repair vs Replace

Fridge Age Fault Recommendation
Under 5 years Any Repair — almost always worth it
5–10 years Gasket, fan, defrost Repair
5–10 years Compressor Get quote, compare to new fridge cost
Over 10 years Compressor or refrigerant Often better to replace
Any age Multiple faults Replace
