One of the most common lines homeowners hear from unscrupulous contractors in Malaysia is: "Boss, aircon tak sejuk sebab gas habis. Kena top-up gas RM150."
Before you hand over your money, here is the honest truth from our senior technicians at Pro Aircon Service: Air conditioners do NOT consume gas.
Refrigerant circulates endlessly through copper coils in a sealed, pressurized circuit. If your gas is genuinely low, there is a leak. Topping up gas without finding the leak is like pumping air into a punctured tire.
Here is what you need to know about refrigerant types, actual market prices, and how to verify if you really need a refill.
2026 Aircon Gas Top-Up Price Guide (Cheras & Klang Valley)
Prices vary depending on the type of refrigerant your aircon requires:
| Refrigerant Type | Common Brands / Models | Average Top-Up Price (20–40 PSI) | Full Empty Refill (Vacuum + Charge) |
|---|---|---|---|
| R32 (Eco-Friendly) | Daikin, Panasonic, Midea, Acson (2018–Present) | RM60 – RM90 | RM150 – RM220 |
| R410A (Inverter) | Inverter models (2012–2020) | RM70 – RM100 | RM180 – RM250 |
| R22 (Legacy Non-Inverter) | Older non-inverter units (Before 2015) | RM80 – RM120 | RM200 – RM260 |
Note: R22 gas is being phased out internationally, which makes it slightly more expensive to source than modern R32 refrigerant.
4 Signs Your Aircon Actually Has Low Gas
Before suspecting low gas, clean your filters first. 70% of "not cold" complaints are simply due to choked dust filters blocking airflow!
If your filters are clean and the fan is running, check for these 4 tell-tale signs:
- Weak, Room-Temperature Air: The indoor unit blows air, but it feels like an ordinary electric fan with zero chill.
- Ice on the Outdoor Valve: Look at the outdoor compressor unit. If the smaller, thinner copper pipe has white frost or ice crusting on it, refrigerant pressure is dangerously low.
- Compressor Runs Continuously: The outdoor unit never clicks off or modulates down because the room never reaches the thermostat set point (e.g. 24°C).
- Hissing or Bubbling Sound: A faint hissing noise behind the indoor casing indicates high-pressure gas escaping through a cracked flare joint.
The Pro Aircon Service Transparent Approach
We don't sell gas you don't need. When you book a Troubleshoot (RM80 flat):
- Manifold Gauge Test: Our technician attaches digital pressure gauges to your outdoor service valve right in front of you. Normal R32 operating pressure is 120–140 PSI.
- Leak Inspection: If pressure is low, we spray soapy bubble solution across copper flare nuts and brazed joints to pinpoint the exact leak point.
- Flare Tightening & Top-Up: We re-flare or tighten the fitting, pull a vacuum if necessary, and charge the precise manufacturer-specified weight of gas.
